Couple Makes U Turn in Court; Pleads Not Guilty To Assaulting Step Son




A 36-year-old father, Olasile Oladejo and his 27-year-old wife, Rasheedat Oladejo who were arraigned for assaulting and tying up of a child have suddenly made a U turn in court by changing their pleas. 

The couple were arraigned on the 28th of May for allegedly beating a boy, the wife's step Son and tied his hand for hours, causing deformation to the wrist.

During their first arraignment before an Osogbo Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo, the couple pleaded guilty, which informed the Chief Magistrate's adjourning the matter till Wednesday, 3rd of June for presentation of facts.

However, when the matter was called on Wednesday, 3rd of June, the two accused persons made a U turn as their counsel, Mr Nwoke told the court that his clients would  change their plea. 

Following the defence's counsel arguement on the ground of fair hearing, the Magistrate, Dr Olusegun Ayilara, granted the prayer of the defence counsel and the accused persons were re-arraigned, pleading not guilty. 

According to the charge read by the Police prosecutor, Mr Fagboyingbo Abiodun, " Olasile Oladejo  and Oladejo Rasheedat on or before 23rd of May 2020 at Opposite Ebunoluwa area of Osogbo assaulted one Oladejo by beating him with wire and tied him with rope to the extend he sustained injuries all over his body. 

He explained that the offence committed contravened sections 516, 355 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State Nigeria 2002 and Section 33 (1), (2) of the child right law 2007. 

The defence counsel, Mr Nwoke applied for bail for his client in liberal terms pledging that they would produce reliable surety. 

The Magistrate admitted the two accused person to bail in the sum of N100,000 and one surety each and adjourned the case to 10 July 2020 for hearing.
